Since implementing a mindful eating practice I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my energy levels after meals. Slowing down to acknowledge a meal that you are about to eat and savoring the bites as they touch your lips may seem like a luxury we just don't have the time for these days (not to mention a bit odd), but there is real evidence that this practice translates into health benefits for you.

Read MorePicture yourself waiting for an elevator late at night, all alone in a quiet building. You push the button and search inside your bag for your keys as your mind wanders through any number of busy thoughts. Suddenly the elevator door opens and you're startled to see a strange man, who for some reason, makes you afraid...

-Norman Doidge, The Brain That Changes Itself
We spend the first half of our lives learning to live in society and the second have unlearning everything we've been taught.
Read MoreHow many of you feel the push to make a big change as we enter a new year? Could it be to lose weight… or to better control your anger… or to be more charitable? As you think about this "resolution" does it come from a place of lack and a desire to undo or clean up past mistakes? Much of the time, New Year's resolutions are mixed up with a sense of failure and the self-critical push to do better or be better because otherwise you aren't good enough...

Read MoreWe tend to give away our power in many areas of our life - in our jobs, in our marriages, in our friendships. It's in these same areas (and more!) that we often find ourselves tolerating less than ideal circumstances...
Read MoreAre you feeding yourself from within or seeking approval and love externally in an effort to feel nourished? Do you allow others to define who you are and who you're not? Do you waste time and energy worrying about what others think of you?
Read MoreWe live in our narrative, our story, our paradigm. Mark Twain said, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”
Our inner story is based on ruminations of the past and fears about what could happen in the future. It’s real, but it’s not true. The story playing in our head and the emotions that go along with it are very real, but our idea is not true...

Read MoreIt was the evening of July 31, 2012 and I had hit rock bottom. My husband and I were celebrating our thirteenth wedding anniversary with a lovely dinner by candlelight that he had lovingly prepared for me at home. At this point, I was aware that something was going awry with my energy level so I knew better than to indulge in my favorite red wine. But, even totally sober and immersed in this romantic setting I was unable to keep my eyes open. My head hit the table and I was asleep before dinner was even served. How did I get here? What was happening to me??
Read MoreI have to admit it. I used to HATE weekends. For that matter, I used to hate summer vacation as well. I’m just going to put it all out there…
Read MoreI was coaching a client just this week who was hesitant to embark on a wellness program that had worked really well for her 8 years ago. She was afraid that this time the path wouldn’t be as easy and she wouldn’t see the same wonderful results if she did it again. Her mind held onto and enhanced the memories of how easy and perfect it all worked out for her back then. She didn’t want to risk being disappointed in the results this time...
Read MoreFor many years I resisted my fatigue. THIS ISN’T ME, DAMNIT!! Before my “health crisis” I was unstoppable. Superwoman, Bree Van de kamp, Martha Stewart - I could rival them all. My energy was boundless. In retrospect, it was a bit manic though, too.
Then all of a sudden the energetic “wind” was completely knocked out of me. I found myself barely able to pack the kids’ lunches or muster the energy to pick them up from school, much less create and host elaborate birthday parties or...
Read MoreIt’s been a busy month. School and all the activities surrounding it have crash landed into our easygoing summer disorder. Plans are being made. Schedules are filling up. Weekends no longer blissfully blend into weeks as sports games, birthday parties and obligations begin to fill the ever diminishing free spaces.
Until a few years ago, I welcomed this structure. With busyness came a sense of control. Control equaled perfection. Perfection meant I didn’t have to face stillness. I could numb the pain. I didn’t realize that meant I was also numbing the joy.
Read MoreIf I can’t be superwoman for my family then how can I really be there for them? How can I insure that I’m doing everything possible to raise my children (or grandchildren) in a loving and supportive environment in the midst of my dis-ease? What does this look like?
I know what it doesn’t look like. It doesn’t look like giving and giving and giving at the expense of yourself, only to end up playing the martyr. Been there. Done that. It didn’t feel so good.
