Therapeutic Tremor | TRE®: Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises

Humans, like other mammals, are neurologically, biologically, and physiologically designed to experience and recover from traumatic events. Deep muscle contractions, created to protect the body from harm during these episodes, are meant to literally be shaken out once the events have ended. The muscles must be released in order to restore calm to the body and prevent the potential development of lingering pain and dis-ease.

We can initiate muscular and emotional release through the practice of therapeutic tremor. This shaking or tremoring evoked by the nervous system, much like we experience during fear or anxiety, signals the brain to release the contraction and restore the body to a state of calm for effective and lasting healing.

“Our overemphasis on the mind has deadened our natural inclination to allow the body to move freely.”

Our overemphasis on the mind has deadened our natural inclination to tremor. Muscular tension is no longer reduced, causing us to continue carrying it in our bodies long after the trauma has ended. In the case of repeated experiences of trauma, the mind will direct the body to freeze or numb out immediately to help reduce the inevitable pain of the next distressing experience. This dissociating command from the brain overrides the shaking mechanism with which we are naturally equipped.

The psoas muscles are considered the fight-or-flight muscles of the human species. These primitive muscles, found deep within our pelvic cavities, stand guard to protect us when we feel threatened (like when our ancestors were physically chased by tigers). Learning to activate these muscles by evoking a shake (as they’re meant to be evoked after a traumatic episode), leads to a tremor that reverberates throughout the body, naturally dissolving deep chronic tension along the way.
