They do too. Really.

How many of you have felt isolated and even rejected in the midst of your dis-ease?

What happens when you’ve sung that hidden illness tune so many times that your song is no longer heard?

Maybe it started with the doctors who couldn’t see anything wrong with you in their impersonal work-ups.

Or maybe you were slapped with labels like chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia and led to believe that there was little more you could do to feel better.

Before long your friends began to fall out of the picture. They didn’t understand, couldn’t relate. Maybe some actually felt abandoned when you weren’t there for them in their time of need.

How about your family? Do you continually feel as though you need to voice your hidden symptoms so that they can understand why you aren’t the wife or mother or daughter you used to be?

Unless they’ve lived with the symptoms of “mystery illness” they cannot possibly understand.

And that’s okay.

Neither can we fully understand their pain. Or their fears. Or their wounds.

But they have them too. Believe me. We all have them.

What we can do is forgive. We forgive so that we can let go of the emotional grip that these grudges have on us. The emotional grip that creates even more physical symptoms of dis-ease.

You can’t change others. You can’t make them understand what you’re going through, but you can know peace within yourself.

And as you release your anger toward others who don’t understand, you can begin the real work of learning to understand and accept yourself.

THIS WEEK: Notice your resentment toward those who don’t seem to care or understand your illness. Could there be hidden parts of them that you don’t understand? Finding this sense of compassion makes it easier to let go of the thoughts that aren’t serving you. The thoughts that are keeping you from feeling your best.
